I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I am not great at looking after my hair. Between having Rose Gold Hair a couple of years ago, and years of straightening & curling (yes, both…with every single wash), it’s not in the best condition – I’m working on it!
So, as part of me trying to get my haircare nailed, I’ve made a commitment to only use heat on my hair twice a month, going forward. Easier said than done, when your natural hair is so damaged that it’s pure frizz very time you wash it, eh?
WHAT IS SLEEP STYLER?
So, I’m going to start by saying…your girl has exhausted Netflix, and has fallen down the hole of watching re-runs of Shark Tank (the US version of Dragon’s Den). Yeah, it’s bad. But it has meant that I’ve discovered a range of weird, wonderful, and confusing products.
The only one I’ve fallen prey to actually buying, though, is The Sleep Styler. They’re heat-free rollers made from memory foam and yoga towel fabric, designed to dry and curl your hair whilst you sleep…meaning you can literally wash your hair, pop the curlers in, and wake up in the morning frizz free. Too good to be true? Well you know I had to find out!
I ordered The Sleep Styler Large kit, as my hair is very thick and very heavy. The kit comes with 8 large rollers, and, much to my surprise, was more than enough to curl all of my hair! There’s also a mini version if your hair is thinner/shorter/less heavy.
HOW DO I USE THE SLEEP STYLER CURLERS?
The instructions included in the kit are really helpful, actually, but I have a Sleep Styler video on IGTV that covers my first time using them if you’d like to see the process and how to use them.
The basic principle is that you wash and towel-dry your hair, then section it and wrap the sections around the curler away from your head – like you would with a curling tong – and then take the velcro strip at the top of the curler and wrap that around your hair in the opposite direction. It’s not the most natural thing in the world, but after the first couple of attempts, it’s pretty easy to get the hang of.
Once you’re done, just head to bed and hope it all works out in the morning!
DOES THE SLEEP STYLER WORK?
Here’s the thing…I was skeptical. As someone who’s tried co-washing and plopping and serums and mousses, I didn’t have particularly high hopes for The Sleep Styler.
But…I’m a convert! I’ve used it twice since my IGTV and haven’t used heat on my hair once. I’ve been washing my hair weekly, and still have some pretty impressive curls in my hair on wash day. And, despite the frizzy, angry nature of my hair, they’re frizz-free. I’d call that a win.
Is The Sleep Styler comfortable to sleep in? Surprisingly, yes. I sleep on my side and the memory foam honestly feels like an extra pillow – no complaints here! They probably aren’t super comfortable if you sleep on your back or have very short hair though, so one to be mindful of.
WOULD I RECOMMEND THE SLEEP STYLER CURLERS?
In a heartbeat if you have curly or coarse hair that lends more to frizzing than anything else – I can’t speak as to how The Sleep Styler works on straight or fine hair, but it’s been a game-changer for me. The instructions claim The Sleep Styler curlers can also be used for straightening, but I can’t vouch for that…let me know below if you’ve tried them in that way!
You can get The Sleep Styler large curlers for £17.93 from Amazon, here, and can watch my IGTV using The Sleep Styler (with instructions) here.
